    As one of the most influential events in the international culture scene, the Salzburg Summer Festival brings thousands of visitors as well as national and international stars, politicians and heads of state to the city. The diversified programme comprises theatre plays, operas and concerts. One of the highlights and a very long tradition is the open-air performance of Hugo von Hoffmanthal’s play “Jedermann” in front of the facade of the Salzburg Cathedral.

    In 1967, the renowned conductor Herbert von Karajan brought the Easter Festival into being as an addition to the Summer Festival. It starts each year on the Saturday before Palm Sunday and lasts until Easter Monday. The programme comprises operas and concerts.

    In the Baroque Hall of the St. Peter Stiftskulinarium, Europe’s oldest restaurant, you can follow Mozart’s footsteps acoustically and culinarily. Enjoy extraordinary menus based on recipes from Mozart’s times, accompanied by Mozart’s best arias and duetts, sung by professional opera singers. Another highlight for Mozart fans is the regular series of concerts in the Marble Hall of the Mirabell Palace. Here, the Mozart family used to entertain the Archbishops and their guests.

The year-long record holder in terms of the number of performances is “The Sound of Music” which is revived almost every season. For children, we recommend visiting the Salzburg Marionette Theatre.

    Even more than Festival and Mozart: Each autumn, Salzburg becomes a magnet for jazz enthusiasts from all over the world. The Jazz and the City Festival takes place at numerous locations such as churches, wine bars, cafés, hotels, and restaurants. The musicians are a wild mix of international stars and promising newcomers. The entrance is free.

    Salzburg is well-known for its large, international Festival stages. Even if there is no Festival season during your stay, we recommend visiting the Large Festival House and the Felsenreitschule (a former riding school built into the rock of Mönchsberg mountain). Aside from the State Theatre, the Schauspielhaus theatre in the district of Nonntal is best renowned for its productions for adults as well as for children.
