Summer retreat and winter fun
If you think Salzburg itself is worth a trip, wait until you get to know the surrounding area. The Salzkammergut regions with idyllic lakes and the Berchtesgaden Alpine region invite countless guests in summer as well as in winter. Culture and history aficionados can visit the “Eagles Nest” on Obersalzberg mountain or the pilgrimage place St Wolfgang at Wolgang lake. Adventurers find countless hiking, biking, and climbing routes and it goes without saying that Salzburg is an Eldorado for winter athletes.

Only a few miles away from Salzburg, in neighbouring Bavaria, lies the town of Berchtesgaden with its picturesque historic city centre. A few miles further south you reach the world-famous lake Königssee surrounded by the impressive mountain ranges of the Watzmann mountain and the Berchtesgaden National Park. The lake cannot be rounded by foot, the best way to explore its shores is by boat, which will also take you to the pilgrim’s church St. Bartholemew. The bus line 840 to Berchtesgaden stops right next to our hotel.
The Eagle’s Nest
A glance back in history with a breathtaking view of the Alpes: The Kehlsteinhaus was built in the Third-Reich-era and was a representative location to welcome and accommodate guests of the state. Today it is a place of remembrance and learning. Its nickname “Eagle’s Nest” stems from its spectacular location. The last metres to the top can be walked on a steep trail, or you can take a 400 feet high elevator inside the mountain.

The Dürrnberg mountain near Salzburg with its many tunnels teaches you everything about the white gold that gave Salzburg its name and made it famous. In the Hallein Salt Mines, you can get an authentic impression on how salt was once mined. The highlight of the tour is a trip across the underground salt lake as well as the steep wooden miner’s slide. The city train line 3 takes you to Hallein in 10 minutes. Alternatively, you can take the bike and ride along the Salzach riverbank.
The World of Ice Giants
Around 30 miles south of Salzburg lies the Eisriesenwelt Werfen (World of Ice Giants). The gigantic cave with 65 feet in width and 60 feet in height is one of the biggest ice caves in the world. The icy inner of the mountain has created fascinating ice sculptures. The cave can be reached via a forest trail or cable car.

On the outside, the 900-year-old rock castle around 25 miles south of Salzburg offers an incredible view of the Tennen mountain ranges. On the inside, it offers loads of entertainment for the whole family. Travel to the Medieval Ages in a guided castle tour, visit the armoury and marvel the performances of the falconry. A hidden gem in the winter: on the advent weekends, a small Christmas market is held in the castle courtyard.
Salzkammergut towns and lakes
Perfect idyll: The Salzkammergut resort area is especially in summer worth a trip. With its numerous lakes with drink water quality and its wild romantic towns, you can experience true Alpine feeling. You can visit Fuschl, home of Red Bull, Mondsee with the famous Basilica from The Sound of Musicas well as for instance the Attersee lake or the Wolfgangsee lake by car or public transport. For dinner and a good night drink, we recommend the beautiful restaurants in Bad Ischl, St. Gilgen or in the world-famous town of Hallstatt.

Another town that is famous for its salt mines is Bad Reichenhall. Here you can visit the modern salt mine that is still in use as well as the historic salt mines, which is considered the most beautiful saline in the world. Our insider tip is a day at the Rupertus Thermal Bath. The thermal pools with Reichenhall brine, the extensive sauna area, and the adventure bath for families offer loads of joy and relaxation.
Hohe Tauern National Park
Wilderness in the middle of Europe: The Hohe Tauern National Park is the home of 15,000 different animal species, from groundhogs to ibexes and chamois and eagles. The nature sanctuary is also well-known for its diverse landscapes and rich Alpine flora. At the heart of the National Park lies the Großglockner mountain. With 12,461 feet it is Austria’s highest mountain.

Whether by motorcycle, car or comfy with the bus – the Großglockner High Alpine Road stands for a special joy of driving. On more than 30 miles the road meanders through the Hohe Tauern National Park and offers spectacular views of the unique mountain ranges. Along the road, there are several theme parks for children and numerous hiking trails.
Oberammergau Passion Plays
The Bavarian town of Oberammergau, 17th century: The Great Plague was raging through Europe. To end the misery, the citizens took an oath in 1633: They solemnly swore to bring the Passion of Christ on stage every ten years, if from then on no one died of the Plague anymore. Their prayer was heard, and the citizens of Oberammergau stay true to their word until today. Around 2,400 people take part in the five and a half hours performance that takes place on 103 days. The next Passion Play is in 2021.

In front of the gates of Salzburg lies the legendary Untersberg mountain, in parts on the Austrian, in parts on the Bavarian side of the border. Numerous hiking trails lead to the mountain top – but the most convenient way up is the modern cable car. Once on the top, you can enjoy the fantastic view of the city of Salzburg and the surrounding mountains.
Open-Air Museum Großgmain
A journey to the past: The Salzburg Open Air Museum with an area of 5400 square feet displays farmers’ houses, barn buildings, churches, and mills from former times. The buildings were carried off from all over the state Salzburg and rebuilt true to original in Salzburg. Some highlights, especially for children, are the adventure playground with tree houses, a water park, and a little train that takes you through the area.
